This Hawks V Roos clash felt like a sluggish Sunday morning training “session” in the good ol VFL days where would be sports scientists would manage the keg as the sole performance enhancing substance. Made from beer, not monkeys. Or bark, or a cows colostrum.

Roos should have won. Had more disposals, contested possessions, hit outs, clearances, inside 50’s, free kicks (a whopping 30 to 15 which earned the wicked field umpires a sustained traditional pantomime send off). Big Hawks ruckman Max Bailey kicks the Hawks first three – one for each knee reconstruction – all from within the goal square. Scot Thompson held Lance “Buddy” Franklin goalless after conceding 13 goals to him in the parallel game last year. Cyril was a star with 4 before blowing his hammy. Lindsay Thomas slotted 5, the sleep shattering goal yips now well behind him. The lid blew off the game in the last 5 minutes as Mitchell and Gunston score truly for the Hawks while Petrie and Wright miss critical match winners for the Roos. It was the sort of game where whoever made the most of the least wasted opportunities won. That was Hawthorn.

I’ve always had a sweet spot for North Melbourne. The kangaroo motif seemed authentic, Australian. A bit like the Gold Coast Suns. The entrepreneurial ethos which awoke an old school outfit into the excitement of those first 2 flags in the 70’s under Barassi. The Pagan era with it’s evocation of a pre war “Shinboners spirit” culture that added 2 more in the 90’s.

My daughter out of the blue became a self anointed “troo roo” at the age of four, her first guernsey slipped on prior to the bounce of the ’96 Grand Final in that golden age of Carey, McKernan, Archer & Bell. Today she’s sitting deep in the Hawks members playing spot the Roo’s fan. She’s calm til deep into final stanza when the state of the game and the torrent of anti Roo diatribe boils over her pot of co team harmony.

As a young teenager I’d take the Victorian Railways train from Leongatha to the big smoke then tram it up to Princess Park, the then Hawks home ground to watch the season blockbuster Hawthorn v North Melbourne. These two teams played off in either preliminary or Grand Finals in 74,75,76,77 and 78. Its the rivalry for the Hawks, Bombers notwithstanding.

I recall Skippy star Ken James in the outer standing in bell bottom jean flares and suede waist coast jacket coiffured with a 2 G force wave cut copping some stick from some terrifying skinheads. 20 kangaroos on the field and not one Skippy to the rescue.

NM’s John Burns in front of the now defunct members stand on Arden Street.

Such was the post war commitment to investment in the railways that my father remarked in 1980 when he took a train to the city that it was the same train he took to war in 1944. Men would load slabs of cans in the carriage compartment, speed drink, then don Victorian Railway uniforms to collect tickets.

In those Happy Days of the 1970s’ I came to love some of the Roo’s players despite they being the opposition. One favorite was John Burns, #11. Solid, speedy, mobile, game making centreman.

He’s still got cachet. You can get his 1975 (premiership year) Scanlens Footy Card for $5.
