Season 2018 ~ Mick's AFL Footy Blog

3 clubs, 23 rounds, A slab of passion….

Mick’s Big Selfies Round 11

kevA lack of discipline brings Carlton  more undone on and off the field than the collective open flies on degenerates sharing their shoppin’ on social media. All over the beggin bowl Lions into the last quarter, Carlton experienced stalwarts Jarod Waite and Chris Yarran return to pre 1990 AFL urban jungle “settle scores meself” acts that result in subsequent penalties then goals. Malthouse’s Blues disappear from the games server like a sans budgie smuggler snapchat selfie and return to the showers for a good old fashioned bake. Fringe Blue Josh Bootsma has his contract terminated after breaching the Club’s and the AFL’s Codes of Conduct through the distribution of images of areas of his skin that generally don’t see sun unless you’re down the beach….a nudist beach.  While electronically displaying a shadow of his former self(ie) to a teenage fan whose mum latches eyes on the human sundial and puts in the accusatorial phone call to the AFL and the club that blows the siren on Josh’s AFL career.

PCD0021_lWho could forget that other celebrated “self shot” incident concerning a nude Nick Riewoldt and then Saint, now Docker Bootsma look alike Zac Dawson that was removed from a teammates computer by the infamous St Kilda schoolgirl back in 2011. Later in the week fans racially vilified Cyril Rioli on social media choosing celebrations during Indigenous round to inflict their own brand of courageous yet anonymous venom. When Johannes Gensfleisch zur Laden zum Gutenberg introduced the printing press back in the 1400s to produce Bibles he unwittingly instigated a control over the means to publish “ideas” only finally overturned by the rise of the world wide web and social media. What amazing progress we’ve made as a society to enable us to freely within the laws of the land transmit self taken images of our own bits, hopefully with a sensible use of inbuilt illumination to avoid the depreciating flash flare phenomenon.

Meantime Dreamtime at the G between Essendon and Richmond proved a fizzer with the Tigers failing to show up and coach Damian Hardwick digging deep all week into his backpack of excuses and recipes, after further frank discussions, that the players had bought into various improvement suggestions and leadership think tanks and that the corner was about to be turned again. Coach looks a dead man walking now the Tigers will miss the eight. Wise arse in the crowd waves a myki card at Jack Riewoldt during rare game set shot. Fountain of youth problem drinker Dustin Fletcher  breaks free off half back gathers the ball 70 metres out and releases a pension defying bomb that splits the sticks for only his 35th career goal. Now looks a certainty to play beyond Buddy’s contract and to be the only player to collect a pension, despite punitive age raising entitlement levels announced recently by Treasurer Joe Hockey.

Geelong’s self assuredness and confidence is punctured when Sydney demolish them in a death by a 110 cuts whacking  in the wet. Tippet and Buddy click up forward, Franklin particularly displaying a new attack on the ball in the air taking a number of contested marks. Even ol Goodsey appears back to fitness finally slotting a few to put the cream out of reach of the wet and shivering Cats.

The Hawks cruelled by injury to serious stars in Mitchell, Gibson, Lake, Rioli, Stratton and Lewis lose their coach Alistair Clarkson to a rare back affliction known as Guillain Barre syndrome which hospitalises him mid week. Into the breach steps assistant Brendon Bolton who nearly oversees a loss to the lowly thrash boys Greater Western Sydney. Saved by late goals to Issac Smith and Jack “Norman” Gunston the Hawks narrowly avoid a humiliation. With Clarko convalescing at home, the Hawks administration predict a potential boil over and have security in place at his home for a potential last quarter rampage against the plasterboard, television, lounge suite, lampshades, fire place, buffet, carpet, paintings, photos and assorted family memorabilia and trinkets. Therapists install a wax dummy of an umpire for him to sound off as pressure release and to minimise the contents insurance excess required. Earlier reports of a trashed hospital ward in response to media reports of his illness later prove unfounded.

The ongoing competitive malaise exhibited by St Kilda, Western Bulldogs, Brisbane and Carlton a testament to the cream of the football draft talent being extruded from their clutches into the protective yolk of expansion clubs GWS and Gold Coast.  St Kilda and Carlton potentially excused by former coaches and administration list top ups to avoid the coming slide for that final elusive tilt at the coveted cup.

The Creed

logo-ptadelaide logo-hawthorn

So Port has a creed? Who over here in Victoria knew? And why wasn’t I told?  Curious, I randomly vox pop 25 people selected at random on the street to ascertain their Creed knowledge and only one, a dishevelled back packer from Glenelg confessed to its knowledge while nervously fidgeting and looking over his shoulder. Poor bastard had lost his Myki card, a long way from home, with no direction known.

Meanwhile in Adelaide, the Port Power await the injury depleted Hawks for their sold out 1 V 2 clash. Non emotionally involved fans will recall the large tarps of Port guernseys that covered entire bays of games telecast from the ol Football Park in a naked attempt to deny that no bastard would turn up to watch them. Now the band wagon is full and this game is sold out.

Port this year have made a few promises – 50,000 members which they’ve smashed and to quote Coach Ken Hinckley mantra that they “We Will Turn Up, We Will Never, Ever Give Up [because….we are Port Adelaide] ” which is handy since the fans are finally following suit after years of no-shows. They also invoke the “creed” in an ancient (i.e. pre crinkled potato chips) call to arms members video that goes back to the future to show the teal brick road to September immortality. You’ll be reaching for the chalice and the $5 Dan Murphy Merlot special after this little beauty:

We’re on Top. No one week at a time about it. Why not this year?

What is a creed I hear you ask with almost breathless curiosity? According to Wikipedia a creed is a “statement of the shared beliefs of a religious community. Creeds are not intended to be comprehensive, more a summary of core beliefs. The term “creed” can also refer to a person’s political or social beliefs, or is sometimes used to mean religious affiliation”….and “The word creed is particularly used for a concise statement which is recited as part of a religious service.

For the uninitiated let me break down some of this terminology:

Religious community – playing list and coaches of a specific AFL club
Core Beliefs – Helicopter view of the belief systems required to spiritually and physically execute the religious communities “game plan”
Political or Social beliefs – the AFL Rules – Laws of the Game 2014
Religious affiliation – AFL football as opposed to volleyballer, squash player or croquet devotee.
Religious service – the period between the religious community arriving and departing the arena on game day

Port Adelaide are in very good company. Most of the world’s religious systems, at least those who’ve caused the most damage,  have had singular or multiple creeds through time – Judaism (though scholars are split on the issue), Islam, the Baptists, most strands of Christianity – Catholics, Methodists, Protestants in all their incantation and often in the various languages of the colonised. Conversely, the idea of having a creed is alien to Buddhism with it’s emphasis on behaviour more than belief and dogma.

In fact you’re starting to look nuts if you don’t have a creed. To wit – The Quakers, The Church of the Brethren, the Unitarian Universalists, Jehovah’s Witnesses,  Carlton Football Club. For a closer to home examples of creed free zones see our earlier piece on Ross Lyon’s Nietzsche cult at Fremantle Football Club.

Even the mighty USA decided they needed an “American’s Creed”, decided by the winner of a nation wide patriotic contest who penned a paragraph that concluded triumphantly with “I therefore believe it is my duty to my country to love it, to support its Constitution, to obey its laws, to respect its flag, and to defend it against all enemies.”

We’ll never Stop Stop Stop til we’re Top Top Top!
Fricken scarey eh? September not that far away.

The Creed’s origin lies in the writings of early Port playing and coaching legend Fos Williams who returns to Port’s spiritual home “Alberton” in 1962 after a 3 year sabbatical. He returns to the home where multiple premierships have been won through his time in the 1950’s. Moved, he crafts a creed for the club as a motivating life guide for the black and white (as they were in the SANFL before the teal and the top top top stuff of the AFL).

09_shaun_burgoyne_246bBURGOYNE ShaunAre you starting to see a pattern here at Port Adelaide? You can now understand why ex Port Adelaide Premiership player and legend, now Hawk Shaun Burgoyne is booed roundly every time he gets the ball tonight. His departure was over 4 seasons ago. he has stepped out of the shadow of the creed, a lost lamb in an endless paddock of non belief. Past contributions rewritten in the collective memory of betrayal…..of the Creed!

A mystique almost masonic pledge, the Creed is an “ethos”, a “call to action”, a “statement of faith”, a Borg like “resistance is futile” mind game with the rest of the competition. It address antagonistic notions of faith with a kind of agnostic communist manifesto for football. Trouble is Port has already realigned the re-distribution of premiership wealth in SA with 36 SANFL flags.

It reads:

fos

Not every man can write a creed. Fos Williams celebrates his arrival on a Legend footy card.

We the players and management of the Port Adelaide Football Club accept the heritage which players and administrators have passed down to us; in so doing we do not intend to rest in idleness but shall strive with all our power to further this club’s unexcelled achievements.

To do this we believe there is great merit and noble achievements in winning a premiership.

To be successful, each of us must be active, aggressive and devoted to this cause.

Fos's son Mark Williams mimics the choke his critics wrongly predict for his destiny as coach. The hangman's noose now part of the "enviable tradition"

Fos’s son Mark Williams mimics the choke his critics wrongly predict for his destiny as coach of Port’s AFL side. The hangman’s noose now part of the “enviable tradition”.

We agree that success is well within our reach and have confidence that each  member of both the team and management will suffer personal sacrifices for the common end. Also we know that should we, after striving to our utmost and giving our everything, still not be successful, our efforts will become a further part of this club’s enviable tradition.

Stirring stuff. When Port are admitted into the AFL, however, they attempt to capture the essence of the creed in a song that unkindly feels like Pete Seeger on a battered 6 string at the front of a factory picket that’s been channelled by Bucks Fizz:

bucks-fizz-big

We’ve got the Power to win
Power to rule
Come on, Port Adelaide aggression
We are the Power from Port
It’s more than a sport
It’s the true Port Adelaide tradition
We’ll never stop, stop, stop
‘Til we’re top, top, top
There’s history here in the making
We’ve got the Power to win
We’ll never give in
‘Til the flag is ours for the taking
POWER!

That’s what they’re singin this week as Port finish over the top of the Hawks in a game of frenetic intensity. The Creed is working.

Hungry Jack’s Round 10 moments

The free-wheelin Jack R

The free-wheelin Jack R

Jack’s week mirrored my own incapacity bedridden with gastro/flu hybrid. Plenty of starts and stops before a flush of goals. Putting himself forward for the weekly press conference having recovered from a self imposed “media ban”, Jack promptly provides ample justification for it with his ill chosen words on Richmond’s inadequate game plan and the aping of the Hawks gameology at Punt Road. His next indiscretion is caused by unnamed mates who fail to show to pick him up from training as a growing storm over his comments grow.  Now pilloried by the media, Jack, keen to skedaddle from attention,  is next spotted escaping the Richmond ground via a series of alleyways after pursuit by a non-football TV crew that happened to be in the Neighbourhood presumably documenting the work ethic of the Punt Road intersection windscreen washers. I admired Jack for going with the fake mobile phone call while topping up his myki to shield his face from the washer chasers. He escapes – for now – the fate of all AFL rats in the barrell – through the station barriers for the voyage back to his lair to await the decision of his coach on his spot in the side.

143803-hardwickEarlier Richmond coach Damien Hardwick said of Jack – “Obviously, we were pretty disappointed, we caught up with him this morning and removed his foot from his mouth and my foot from his arse.” The boot up the arse. A smart arse gets a clip behind the ears, but a dickhead or “dreamer” gets a boot up the arse, literally a re-boot to strike combustive strokes back into the machinery of good sense. My old man used to talk of being caught as a boy for some public chicanery by the local cop who then dispensed the time honoured boot up the arse to drive home the message of good community not just to him but to all who witnessed it in the “village square”. You wont find this penalty on the statue books and no doubt there’s no longer funding for it after Abbott’s first budget now power is measured by the dollar.

211021_263591947086086_823597705_oI worry for the Tigers in the lead up to the Giants game and tip the Orange people to pop another size 10 into Jack’s collective Khyber Pass. Jack turns round and kicks 11 in a training run against the AFL’s present and future problem side. Everyone loves a retribution story and post game Jack can continue to eat humble pie safe in the knowledge that his Coach’s boots stay on his feet and not again wedged motivational style up high into his goal square.

The orange people metaphor favoured by the Greater Western Sydney cheer squad needs examination and perhaps correction. The original Orange devotees relied not on ideology and philosophy, but on practices, techniques and methods aiming to offer every individual the chance to discover and choose their own proper religious path; the intent was to lead people to an essential, universal religiousness. Perhaps explains the form hole the Westies are in.

tnthnWEST Coast Eagles midfielder Elliot Yeo has his two front teeth knocked out in a collision with Collingwood’s Jarrod Witts while his mouthguard takes a sabbatical tucked in his sock.  Lucky for Yeo it occurs near the end of the quarter so theres plenty of trainers from both sides on hand to search for the errant enamel. Quoting orthodontists quick to emerge with agreement cementing on a life time bill for Yeo of around $70,000 for a couple of bumper bar caps. Reminds of a large “SMILE” sponsorship sign from local tooth professor at the stadium where my kids played basketball.  During slow games I’d question the sponsorship motivation. The subliminal message to me always read – “Enjoy your game kids but secretly I’m hopin that some of you get your teeth knocked into your gut”

1401008138037.jpg-620x349Fearsome Pie warrior Nick Maxwell reignites his backline generalissimo status as he publicly belts and berates defence virgin teammate Alex Fasolo for thinking outside pick up rather than “pick up a bloke” accountability. Those bloody midfielders eh? Already down with injuries to Brown and Frost, Nick quickly adjusts to the pressure of blooding new defenders. You get the feeling he’s a boot up the arse man.  Timely reminder of his argumentative relationship with ex Pie now Orange person Heath Shaw where on field disputes, finger pointing and stand offs were a attractive by-product of a day at the footy. Remember the good old days when both were suspended for that betting scandal back in 2011 centring on Maxwell to kick the first goal in the match against Adelaide in Round 9 where the penalty for both concluded right on the eve of the finals?

ablett-scuffleGary Ablett sent an enormous scare through the much respected footy betting community after he’s put on report for an errant elbow on tagging scragging Dog Liam Picken who’d done the tagging job on the gun. Betting on the  Brownlow medal is suspended as the match review panel pours over a paucity of video footage. Gaz beats the report rap with no case to answer and wifi speeds accross the nation slow to a crawl in the ensuing queue to get back on board Ablett and associated smokies. Memo to Elliot Yeo – note mouthguard on Gaz. In Mouth, not in sock.

034270-7500b874-1b7b-11e3-885a-29191a963f6eCarlton regroup after realising the age of entitlement is over at three quarter time as Adelaide free loadback into the game on the back of an umpire funded scholarship. An undercooked pie of a game til the second half that even the seagulls turn their back on it explodes into an epic contest. Compelling viewing watching Mick’s emotional roller coaster in the box, a great lesson for all young aspiring actors looking to channel their inner anger and frustration for those gritty on the edge roles.

Gonna cost a side a premiership – Micks Big Moments Round 9

“Gonna cost a side a premiership” is the chorus after those one in a million events. Like the Crows getting a cheap one after three quarter time because the Adelaide crowd is so loud no bastard can hear the siren. Pies take the gas in the last quarter in any event. This cheap phrase gets rolled out as a megaphone to action! It screams DO SOMETHING in case it screws a team out of it’s just rewards!!! So far the following have been cited with the potential to cost a side a premiership:

  • The introduction of the sub
  • Cameras on goal umpires heads
  • Runners on the ground filling defensive spaces
  • The abolition of the goal umpires ties and dust jacket
  • The fashion of tight shorts
  • The cancellation of the keg at Sunday morning training
  • Boundary umpires who can’t throw in very far
  • Eddie McGuire
  • Fox Footy
  • The Goal review system
  • The price of pies at the MCG
  • The political crisis in Thailand

WatergateRFD-custom1Eddie “You ol C**t” McGuire is aghast over a Crow goal allowed after the game clock has ticked past zero at three quarter time. Ed moves on from things pretty fast and can generally walk away from such gaffes without any collateral damage to himself. This quality is shared by and another Adelaide boy who sledges back in Federal Parliament with his own c**t rebuke to the Opposition leader during the budget debate.

Sirengate is invoked after Eddie rages. Oh the injustice! The disgrace! The lack of professionalism! Not Ed or course, the AFL. Sirengate is the game back in 2006 when St Kilda tied a game up in Launceston after the final siren which was not heard by the umpires. The result was overturned after stringent AFL analysis and awarded to opponents Fremantle. Why do we put “gate” after every scandal in footy or in life? Wasn’t scandal a perfectly good word both before and after Watergate? – Siren Scandal V Siren Gate?

3 rounds of 6 games with teams having byes every week a third into the season is driving me batty. The inanity of the current split round along with the staggered start to the season feels like footy hasn’t really got going this season, a bit like my life after 42 I guess.

Gold Coast torch St Kilda in the first term or two and looks like the Saints will be marchin in with a boot up the Seaford bypass. Saints hold tough in second half to avoid a meltdown and Riewoldts goal running into the forward fifty getting the jump on his opponent as the angle diminishes yet still unleashes a deft ground curvy astro physics influenced major curling in an arc through the middle.

Freo’s Hayden Ballantyne’s Goal in the west is on another plane – again one on his against his Cat rival , the ball falls in almost the identical spot to Reiwoldts and he gets the bounce to collect. He sidesteps through a dummy one to put Rivers offside and goal side onto his right. Rivers is fooled but recovers to close the gap til Ballantyne sells again and gets clear for a shot from 35. Magnificent goal. Steve Johnson’s ongoing duel with Freo’s Ryan Crowley continues with pushing, shoving, wacking, dragging into other players and a headbutt that earns Johnson a suspension for a week. He gets under the skin, does Crowley.

Gotta feel for the Cats (not) – they are the Dockers bunny. Last game they took a wacking from em in a home final sending them into the arms of a Hawk come from behind defeat in the preliminary final. This time its at Subiaco and legend “Pav” is celebrating his 300th game. Gotta quieten the crowd early. Not so as he goals 45 seconds in from the boundary to a standing ovation then gets another when he kicks his 600 goal later on. Another one when he’s chaired from the ground and a final ovation when he emerges from the showers.

Booing the umpire during the game regardless of his justification in paying or ignoring a free kick for your side is one of the time honoured principles of AFL supportership. The boos get taken to a new level at Ethihad after during the Sydney V Essendon slice and dice after the umpire gets wacked out cold as a collision with Swan Nick Malceski. Umpires used to getting a boo(s) but this is a new innovation going after one who is slowly coming too under the watchful eye of the Dons Doctor because he is holding up the game.

Buddy rips apart Essendon again. He loves em. Kicks a bag. Averages 5 against em a game. Then the bump is back as Hannebury takes out Hurley. In the head, knocks him on his arse. Hannebury gets off. The game patriotics breathe a sigh of relief – the bump lives for now but appears on the endangered list.

The new Federal Budget emerges as metaphor for where footy has got to in the relationship between league and fans. Hard hearted and punishing the average fans for the swingers uptown attuned to subscription TV. Both surplus and crowds are down. Inequities in the contribution to the nation’s funds and choice of seat in the allocation of A Grade games short circuiting what little popularity remains. Not to mention the transport co payment required of remote taxpayers punished under the AFL game scheduling late Sundays, Mondays and Thursday nights. Voters and members alike looking for a tax system that’s easy to live by and understand just like a 2.10 game on a Saturday arvo.

art-svBANNER-620x349

Roos’s bungle on banner against Lions reading: “RIP Tom Hafey. One week Lions, Nek Minnit  Bears, As long as North wins, No one really cares.” Doh! Cheer squad blame Club. Club says don’t mention Tommy. Cheer squard wont to pay homage. Club says dont mention Tommy. Cheer squad fails to put line under RIP Tom Hafey. Bannergate has begun! Almost breaks the unwritten rule too of not mentioning the opposition to give em free whack and that extra bit of American mustard on the hotdog of motivation. Brisbane – besieged by new coach, new game plan, board instability, retirements and injuries are destroyed in any event.

Richmond fold on the biggest day. No one at the club knows why. The stats seem to suggesting the club is crap at most key indicators.  Listening today to a replay of the minute long standing ovation set in my mind the depth of memories from those who Tom touched in many ways. Melbourne Coach Paul Roos reverses the psychology by suggesting the Dees play as if honouring the Tom Hafey way of football. They do and while Richmond shank their way to defeat, Dee whipping boy Jack Watts stands up in the last for a couple of gut running goals to bring him closer to the faithful and those also outside the tent.

edelston_and_hafey_gallery__470x360However with the reflections upon Tommy, one question has been puzzling me, a question of forgiveness. Years ago I was holidaying with my Collingwood loving mate. We chanced upon a Pie insider from the ’77 Grand Final. That’s the season where Tommy Hafey took em from the bottom to a tied Grand Final and then a 27 point defeat in the replay. Mate keen to know what went wrong. Inside knowledge from him alleges that “Tommy flogged em on the track” in between Grand Finals and the Pies run out of gas in the replay. Never been able to get a secondary source to attest this rumours veracity. No mention in the literature.  This is scripture and verse to Mate who takes it to heart. Today I text him to see if he’s ready to bury the hatchet. “Can you forgive art-edelsten3-620x349Tommy now for ‘flogging them on the track’ before the ’77 replay” I gently proffer. His response is quick and cold “Vendetta stands. No forgiveness.”.   He’s relentless my mate, still cant forgive Josh Fraser for alleged misdemeanors in those Grand Finals against Brisbane at the start of this century. Don’t get him started on Bucks and Mick! Thankfully Dr Geoffry Edelstein his one time boss when Tom was coach of the Sydney Swans adds some decorum to this situation at Tom’s memorial service at the MCG.

Incidentally, for trivia nutters this was the first Grand Final telecast live. Channel 7 paid the princely sum of $500,000 for both games and ratings blew through the roof in both games. The start of where we are today where TV rules the fixture.

Mr Bump’s Big Moments Round 8

photo(3)Just pitched an idea for a book about a character called Mr Bump….

“Poor Mr. Bump – he’s always covered in bandages. He just can’t avoid bumping into hips, shoulders and elbows. On account of his accident-prone nature, he has cost many others weeks on suspension; but his luck changes when Mr. Fraser the Chairman of the Match Review Panel employs him to work through his concussion test.  Now our bumping beauty spends his time wandering around the change rooms, and knocking all the Gatorade off the tables. Poor Mr. Bump can’t help getting hurt and none of the Mr. Men and Little Misses do care or not because he’s a bit clumsy and it wasn’t his fault.

The character is loosely based on a bloke who used to work for the library group my organisation rented a basement office from. The bloke used to haul furniture stored in the basement to various other library branches as required. Tables, chairs, shelves, cupboards – usually on his own. Consequently he was exposed to the bump more frequently than you or I. The first time I meet him he had a massive red blood shot canker like object in the eyeofjupitermiddle of his forehead atop a slowly spreading purple base. That’s right – he’d hit his head while moving furniture. Maybe on the stairwell, the door jamb, an open door, the hatch on his van or even an inadvertent trip into a stationary piece of furniture. You’d go about your business and a few days later he’d show up again rustling through the basement for the exact furniture piece he was to consign. There’d be a new bump, roughly similar in size to the first one you’d witnessed but in a new position as though objects were controlled by some extra dimensional force to move around his head like the eye of Jupiter. The last time we saw him, presumably before he was retrenched, he had a hack in his head so demonstrable we knew it to be a result of an encounter with the corner of a table. How does that happen? How do you ask him? How do you keep your chin up in a job where you might take a bruise to match the one over your eye at any minute? What is the most simultaneous bruises he’s had? The questions you died to have answered but must lay unspoken. We never knew his name, his whole existence was narrowed by a work colleague to the simple phrase to narrate him – “Mr Bump”.

This week we know all the names of those who hurt the various fall guys who masqueraded as Mr Bump on grounds around the country. Felt like a free for all in the round immediately following the contentious Demon Jack Viney bump ban then overturn on appeal. The game under siege, a line in the sand between the physicality of the past, present and future if the bump is dumped.  As we fall back from the brink the celebrations begin:

Mr-Bump– Roughead wacks McGlynn in a very private lonely place momentarily.
(1 week)
– Chapman elbows Lion Jack Redden channelling world championship wrestling on a dark day.
(1 week)
– LeCrais thumps in the head GWS Will Hoskin-Elliott  almost “on principle” and with a flair that exhibits maximum joy in its execution.
(1 week)
– Duffield head hunts Port’s Chad Wingard like a cowpoke at the end of his wits with a recalcitrant steer.
(Reprimand)
– Liam Jones crazy hoon hammering Dee Dean Terlick into Lady GaGa land.

Happy birthday Mr Bump!

Vale Tommy

20hx6h3.jpg[Tom Hafey died this week. Lots of great stories today on Radio about experiences with him along the beach he swam at and the running course he frequented. Of talking about life. Of not mentioning the word Richmond and Collingwood in conversation with strangers. But that’s where his infamy came from, along with that “in any weather” tee shirt. 4 winning Grand Finals at Richmond, 5 losing Grand Finals at Collingwood – they played it twice in 1977 and lost both times. His 73/74 Richmond side was the closest to outlaws we’d seen in the VFL – all those huge biceps, zapata moustaches, cheek, guile and skill. Tommy made that.

Screen shot 2014-05-13 at 10.42.39 PMEndless sense of community and media angst permeating football yet good games are there for the taking/watching. The moaning about food prices and the AFL’s new pricing strategy and game classification however is justified. The game however this season has been terrific but the inequities between those at the top and bottom of the ladder is a concern…..

…..for what if the franchise clubs are just shite? GWS spanked by 111 points by the West Coast.  Perhaps we’re only now just understanding the miracles “Sheeds” worked with the Giants last year. Going backwards, playing to no-one in Canberra and absolute die-hards in Western Sydney. Thankfully those “orange people” rob wearing cheer squad members behind the goals have been moved on as a marketing concept.  However, chants, incense, drums and cheap vego meals could be one way to con fans into Spotless Stadium. Gotta string such wins together a la Gold Coast as the young out of contract rats might start deserting the listing orange ship for the riches south and west.

Reformed goal approach stuttering showboat Eagle Josh Kennedy kicks 11 for the Eagles without a stutter, shuffle, tic or ear shaped run up.

Field of women is a magnificent initiative from Melbourne on the back of Mothers days classic. A powerful symbolism and a great game to follow.

J_Billings_nSaints Jack Billings referred to as the “Billings Method” in commentary by Anthony Hudson on Fox during Carlton game as Jack kicked for goal. What is the metaphor here?  The % conversion rates on shots on goals? Before Mothers day if you don’t mind Anthony. Apply the method and there’s no Mother. Dont want to give Anthony ideas but if Jack is dropped does he become the withdrawal method? Should he be chasing the pill? Don’t get him confused with the Kangaroo’s Leigh “Patch” Adams.

50 Shades of Swans

Screen shot 2014-05-12 at 9.24.16 PM logo-hawthorn

The pain of Friday night with Bruce and Dennis intensifies as the Hawks look spooked in the first quarter. From afar they seem taken in by the enormity of playing against their ol pal Buddy. Kicks are smothered, Buddy is outmarking Kyle Cheney on demand and returns his best set of contested mark numbers for some years. He’s ready to play and our lads are struggling to make the possession game work. Already down Hodge, Mitchell, Lake, Spangher and Sewell through injury before Cyril strains his hammy early in the third.

51st+TV+Week+Logie+Awards+Winners+Room+6PWI5x2lvrjlIt gets harder to watch Channel 7 as the match progresses. Bruce and Dennis seem to have caught the Brian Taylor bug of willing the team in front to stay to there constantly providing suggestions, motivation, game plans, fears and areas for continuous improvement. Its a verbal Gnatt chart resulting in becoming Shatt off. My 20 something son 110 kilometres away hooks into the match live on the net via some ingenius googling and the SMS dissection on Bruce begins. I offer that I’ve never forgiven Bruce for the line back in ’97 when he talks in a long forgotten forward streaming to goal with “He loads it up and he BANGS IT HOME”. He counters with his own Bruce story as his metabolism rises in concert with Bruce’s devotion to Cyril’s ground work –  “He’s teasing us all. He prolongs. He prolongs it. Oooooh. The Ecstasy!!!”. We footnote his use of “Delicious” to further describe Cyril on a separate occasion – “He’s one of the most watchable players in the competition, what a delicious young player he is, is Cyril Rioli.” In the past it was Andrew McCleod that gripped him in this eroticised manner – “McLeod. Oh Andrew. Look at the arms on the man. Special. I love him”. “Doesn’t he”, “hasn’t he”, “won’t he!???…Dennis??? ”

Yes Bruce is besties with the besties in the AFL. BFF!!

Gee, Friday night Football becomes Boogie nights. My son is an honours year Philosophy student so is quick to provide the thesis that peer evidence supports the proposition that Bruce is stuck in that “grey” area between verbal “picture painting” aesthetics and outright pornography. Commentary without aristocracy is a pathetic market share he argues now warming to the prosecution of Bruce from a political economy perspective. This is like sitting at the foot of the master at one of those new fancy MOOCs.  50 shades of Bruce? Free 8 hour program with peer review assessment – “special”.

He’s the commentary equivalent of a lap dance man. Entry to the conspicuously named “Gentleman’s” G is via a discrete side entrance. An entrance solely for Bruce, leading him to a subterranean rooms full of TV’s covering every angle of the action. Seduced by the dancers on screen, he begins to commentate. No scrubbers here – each dancer is chosen not because they’re “clever” but because they’re “special”. “You get the feeling” that the next sentence is g o i n g  t o  b e  s t r e t c h e d  o u t  as hheeee c l e v e r l y meassssssssures t h e kick”  before the final execution with a marvellous/clever/delicious/wonderful et al play defining adjective.

“It”s unbelieeeeeeeeeevable”.

Screen shot 2014-05-12 at 6.27.54 PMCould we see a career change in his twilight years where Bruce calls in future Eurovision finalists exploiting the deep tension between ancient nations balanced finely through that sweet cultural byproduct that is Eurotrash pop music? To move from capturing the leopard like athleticism of Cyril to the verbal gentility on the edge of Conchita Wurst, the bearded lady who won the Eurovision Song Contest on Sunday morning following this game. “Gee….delicious….clever…..specialllllllll….wont it Dennis?”

Of course after a come back second quarter we hit the front in the third and are just hanging on. I’m thinking if Bruce pipes up with “another feeling that the next goal will tell the story of the match”, I will throw up my cheezels. A crescendo of obscenities is piffed at the television as Buddy of all people splits the centre twice in the last after 7 mis aligned shots on goal through the match. One is a trade mark long bomb, the other a quick snap off his left on the ground with Hawk Shoenmachers failing to close the goal side gap. It dribbles through and it’s a reverse moment of elation having been here many times in his Hawk time. Swans win and suddenly the Hawk position of market dominance looks shaky with Port ahead of us after the bye.

Reversing that elation one more time as the sadness of losing Buddy turns to anger post game,  I reminisce over my favourite goals from him as a form of resolution therapy favoured by my current counsellour. Many of these feature Bruce at the mike in the Gentleman’s club.

#1 In 2007 Buddy arrives with 2 sensational 50+ metre goals in the last quarter, the second to give the Hawks the lead with 12 seconds to go against Adelaide in an elimination final – the Hawks first finals appearance for 6 years.
“…..Delicious isnt it Dennisssss….!”

#2 2 more against Essendon as Buddy after burners on poor Essendon sap coming back from a hammy running around the members wing at the MCG bouncing before goaling from the intersection of the boundary and the 50 metre mark. He repeats the dose a few moments later from a similar position splitting the middle.
“…Wonnnnderfullllllllllllll goallllllll”

#3 The third quarter of the the 2012 Grand Final and the Hawks are spent, hammered into submission after a Swan whirlwind second quarter. Enter the Budmeister. First he marks 60 out on the left hand side of the fifty, he plays on laconically, steadies, aim and dispatches a long long goal. Later, with a deft sidestep of hapless outmarked opponent Reid, he swings inside to this left boot and releases off 2 baby steps a monster drop back from outside the 50. The goal umpire follows intently the traverse like he’s turned to stone. 2 more in the 2012 losing Grand Final in the third quarter
“Gee Dennis, that’s special on the biggest stage of all. My oh my – gorgeous”

#4 On a rampage against North Melbourne kicking 13 goals at Launceston in 2012. The last is kicked on the siren as he presents ahead of opponent Scott Thompson for a mark off a rush inside 50 floater that bounces short. He traps in with his shins, picks it up, swings onto his left and sends it toward 6 points. The siren sounding as the ball descends after piercing the big sticks.
“……he’s teasing us Dennis, clever unbelieeeeeeeeeevable goal isnt it Richo??? Gee!”

So long Buddy and thanks for all the shanks.

Bruce………Gee.

Mick’s Big Moments Round 7

Chonmage Purin image 05Hawthorn’s Ryan Shoenmacher returned from an ACL injury sporting a samuri style pony tail or top knot as opposed to the neck knot. Is Ryan, along with Don Michael Hurley and Pie Brodie Grundy part of a clandestine warrior cult adhering to the samuri metrosexual virtues of rectitude (gi), courage (yu), benevolence (jin), respect (rei), honesty (makoto), honor (meiyo), and loyalty (chugi) ?  Known as a “chonmag”, the top knot is designed to keep the samuri’s helmt on his head. The code also dictates a samurai could regain lost honor by committing ritual suicide (seppuku) – presumably accompanied by a restoration of a short back and sides. Now the samuri has died out in modern Japan, the only remaining wearers of the chonmage are sumo wrestlers.  While skilled athletes in their own realm, they are a far cry from the sculptured muscle mass of today’s elite AFL footballer.

The current penchant for the “chonmag” reminds me of those Chinese and Thai phrases lads have tattooed on their arms as a sign of wisdom, enlightenment and of course toughness. I remember asking a bloke who had one what the Chinese typography inked on his arm signified and shamefully – for a warrior – he did not know. I proffered that I knew and offered as a translation “Number 67 Lemon Chicken and Rice”. I take the consequential hit for the sake of warriors everywhere.

bessemarOn Friday night while walking toward the G for the Collingwood V Carlton I spot a Pie fan attired in shorts revealing massive calves supporting a physique favoured by architects of the beach side changeroom/dunnies from the Bessemer brick inspired 1960s. I swear I see a face on each calve, possibly a tatt of each child he has borne? Driven by my innate love for art naive, I quicken my stroll to take in the work of the obvious delicate genius who has put child to this canvas of skin. About to pull out the iPhone to commit the vision to pixels when I realise the images are of deceased and prized Rottweilers complete with name and an innovative curved R.I.P. cut in the appropriate gothic font. Looking to Google on return from the Pies savaging of the Blues, I realise an established art movement has erupted in my cultural ignorance and shelter from the I’ll wear it proudly ethos that permeates an elite clique in the doglovers world.

In a galaxy far far away lives a parallel universe of Adelaide media with the ability to commentate Port and Adelaide games without the need to barrack for the home team incessantly. During Fox Footy’s commentary of Melbourne’s away win over Adelaide, home town hero Mark Ricciuto’s special comments revolved essentially around willing the Crows back into the game, even with 44 seconds to go.

topknotHairdressing sources inform that the short length of the Rottweilers head hair prohibits the apeing of the “chonmag” craze sweeping the Shih Tzu community.

Cat Joel Selwood sports bleeding from his third eye yet is permitted to kick a long goal in the last quarter against the Tigers that wins the game. At the following bounce the Umpire simply asks him to wipe the blood off with his hand onto his shorts (that presumably no-one will touch), then finally when the bounce goes haywire, he is sent off under the blood rule. Tigers lost by 5 points.

Kangaroos consistent inconsistency continues after final quarter whipping. Almost squaring the ledger at half time after giving the Suns a 7 goal quarter time head start, Gary Ablett leads an avalanche of goals to propel the tan hunters to a 43 drubbing. Lauded as giant killers after stunning both Freo and Sydney away from home, the Sunday night muffins with vegemite and cheese go down well whilst reading the storm of angst on the Kangas Facebook page. Here’s a sample:

Big week for Eddie McGuire. After undoing his previous good work last year with Adam Goodes post a Pies supporter’s racial villifcation, this week he was back in the focus for invoking slang chat for specific female anatomy in reference to Power Pensioner Kane Corne’s age. While today Goodsey’s announced last years incident pulled the pin on the relationship with Ed, there are no hard feelings from Kane.

Teflon Eddie puts another one behind him, walking between the raindrops. 3 strikes and yer out?

Saints Traits

logo-hawthorn logo-stkilda

I have a few friends that barrack for St Kilda. Its a bit like having a family member who’s always got an aliment or too, terrible back luck with broken limbs, is short of a quid, cant quite dance, is cursed in relationships and is forever losing their car keys. There’s a sense of ongoing pity.

These were my words after St Kilda were defeated by Collingwood last year. In that post I chronicled the roll call of coaches and the ongoing tease of September glory that has proved continually elusive and draped in ongoing random despair. As if you won tattslotto and then wash the jeans with the winning ticket in the back pocket. Every item of clothing you wear for the next 6 months bears the reminder of that ticket ingrained in every fibre eluding your best efforts with your “Clothes Magic” lint remover.

But how do you erase the memory of a 145 point decimation?  Rain and early injuries to Mitchell and Lake seem early to help St Kilda over come the paucity of their 2 goals to 6 opening term. Instead the dam walls collapse and the foreboding spectre of a thrashing floods their psyche.

Much of this weeks media’s attention was on Daisy Thomas’s first game against his old club in a tiresome beat up by proxy of the Mick V Bucks allegiance gone bad.  Today, relatively unreferenced, Big Boy McEvoy and Shane Savage play against their old clubs St Kilda and Hawthorn respectively. Ryan Show and Marker does exactly that in his come back game from an ACL reconstruction as a born again forward complete with Samari style pony tail. Schoenmachers is one of 4 Hawks along with  Gunston, Roughead and Bruest to queue up to each kick 4 goals – the same number the Saints manage.

We could talk about the game but the focus would come down to the the crook neck suffered by the goal umpire following the traverse of the footy through the big sticks. Instead, here is the slide from which there is no hide from the Saints website jquery of scrolling human interest stories….

Screen shot 2014-05-04 at 4.35.36 PMLets quickly analyse the syntax here for its buffering of the outcome:

Disappointing – failing to fulfill one’s hopes or expectations
(The synonyms are more insightful here – sadden, disillusion, dishearten, disenchant.)….again – refer to early post.
Falter – lose strength or momentum.

What’s missing here is a confessional description that paints exactly the relentless nature of the belting St Kilda has just received at the MCG. Imagine being on the end of a continuous series of wedgies for one hundred and twenty minutes. You –  feeling the elastic of your Y fronts meeting the back of your neck again and again as each Hawk goal, evasion, tackle and possession drives a wrenching hawk hand with a fistful of cotton upwards.  By the time the siren blows to end the game your undies have become a hoodie as a sort of reverse atomic mankini. The only good news is that its raining at the end and this injustice at least makes up for your oversight in not packing a poncho.

And here are the statistics that paint a harsher view of the game than do my own partisan Hawk chest beating:

  • 21 of the last 23 goals are kicked by the Hawks
  • Go back to 1980 for the Saints to have borne as big a flogging
  • Worst St Kilda score since 2000
  • Saints didn’t kick a score in the 2nd quarter
  • Lowest half time score in a game against the Hawks since 1960 during Round 9. I recall vaguely listening to this game in utero.
  • Hawthorn’s biggest ever win over St Kilda
  • 4 Hawks kick 4 goals equal to St Kilda’s goals for the game
  • 5th largest win in Hawk history
  • 5th largest loss in St Kilda history
  • 25 inside 50’s only by the Saints, the lowest since records began.
  • 68 inside 50’s by the Hawks, the highest differential ever…..
  • St Kilda captain Nick Reiwoldt held goalless

I could go on but here’s the breakdown. Try to read it without feeling the presence of a sub conscious traverse of your undies…

photo
Fittingly Jordan Lewis, Hawk hard nut boots the last Hawk goals in this his 200th game. The Saints fourth goal at the death is a gimme from the Umpires who look away shamelessly as an obvious throw gets from Montagna sets up Steven to a ringing chorus of booing hawk fans.

St Kilda travelling okay until this point appear to be under pressure again. Armitage, Gilbert, ruckman Dunstan and young Templeton, all core players look to be lost for the short term to injury. Ahead of them, after next weeks bye await the Roo toppling Suns, another bye and then Collingwood. May God have mercy on them all.

Mick’s Big Moments Round 6

Another Anzac day comes and goes and still we are no closer to the truth. Where is Essendon, West Coast and Fremantle?

After the annual morbid talk of the state of the goal and the need to reduce player numbers on the field, returning the 19th and 20th men or legislating for an unAustralian offside/backwards preventing rule, unlikely game redeemers Carlton and West Coast put on a bottler at the Docklands human pressure cooker.

Port Adelaide double their home crowd numbers after leaving behind the Footy Park Drive in experience for the lush modernity of Adelaide Oval. Spanking Geelong this round by a lazy 40 points the perfect anecdote to the Easter Monday defeat of the Hawks.

“It is what it is”, “As I say”, “It was an accident”, “Accidents do happen”. A series of Buddy quotes providing penetrating insights into the exact nature of the bingle on a Sydney side street that wiped out his girlfriend’s sponsor supplied Jeep as well as the parked vehicles of 4 innocent bystanders. Against Demons, cops a bit of a goading and whacking from Demon players being crashing his own knee in the second quarter. Screen Shot 2014-04-30 at 7.27.36 PM Sunday afternoon sun and half a litre of coke, chocolate and bottomless pits of lollies each for a pair of disillusioned Tiger 6 year olds adjacent to us behind the Punt Road goals. Lads put up more fight than their Tigers as they wrestle, punch, kick and shake seats to the ongoing indifference of their mother and ignorance of their bourbon charged Dad. Thoughtfully they leave as a group early in the last quarter despite numerous Clarko style “bakes” from yours truly while keeping watchful eye for possible gorilla martial arts possessed Uncle.

Commando, Michelle and Shannon along with the Biggest Loser crew depart Ararat for Fremantle looking for new ideas to help lose weight off the runner up monkey now triple stitch sewn onto their back.

St Kilda’s Shane Savage costs a possible Sainter victory in the land of the long white cloud with a return ball piff way over the head off his opponent deep in the forward line with 44 seconds on the clock. 50 metre penalty shuts the door on the game.

Brent Boomer Harvey has the last laugh via Twitter after obliterating the tag of Ryan “Serial Pincher” Crowley on way to 29-possessions in the Roo’s shinboner spirit defeat of the Anchors at Subiaco.

Carlton and Collingwood awaits! Boo Mick, Hooray Bucks!!!! The Pavlovian dichotomy of the big screen response.

Tiger Survivor

richmondlogo_header logo-hawthorn

Richmond emerge to survivor style “the tribe has spoken” drumming from a group of enthusiastic youthful Punt Road volunteers. The 12 o clock arm lift and skin hit technique as favoured by new Beatle Ringo Starr back in the Cavern in ’63, quickly morphs into the “Oh We’re from Tigerland” anthem further stretching the safari metaphor.

As most Tigers fans know the AFL is a jungle out there and it makes me wonder what it keeps em from goin’ under. The pre-game highlights of past glories end at the 1980 Grand Final and most of the rest is in black and white, from the early to mid seventies when Richmond was the powerhouse club of the AFL. The past 34 seasons are a horrific GroundHog Day style rerun of revolving door coaches, tin rattles to save their skins, board upheaval, paucity of finals appearance and under achievement.  Once proud, now a laughing stock – even beaten last year by nemesis Carlton in the Tiger’s first final since Sir Joseph Banks pulled on the boots for the infamous Scientists V Shippers scratch match at Sydney Cove. Carlton! Who only made the finals because Essendon season was supplemented with an AFL penalty.

177088

About the only thing that puts some sauce on the weekly MCG pie for these success disenfranchised Tiger lovers is the opportunity to belt out that YELLOW AND BLACK bit during the song before the game. After the match of course that potential a lot less assured. You feel like you’re being stalked by a bogeyman at a panto – “Where is He?”…..Booo!!!!…..”Oh God please reveal yourself….Boo!!!…then…..“YELLOW AND BLACK!!!!!” – oh yeah hey mate you’ve just spilt pie on your sash. Personally I’d be a lot more confident about the Tigers if it was BLACK AND YELLOW.

We’re a tad worried today about our Hawks, given the hold the Tigers have had over us in the past two outings where essentially we’ve been spanked by these later day basket cases.

woodyTiger legend Bryan Wood is interviewed in the goal square in front of the cheer squad about the glory days. He’s then invited to ceremonially –  for the good old days –  shoot for goal from a mere 10 metres out, with virtually no chance of missing. He playfully slips a mongrel off the boot about a wheelbarrow height off the ground spiraling in the fashion of a kick for goal from big Hamish McIntosh. This epitomises the current state of the Richmond Football Club – an easy quick one. Why not take Woody out to 30 metres from goal to give him a heart starting real test and to simmer the blood of the fans?

I’m also concerned about the half time entertainment during this Richmond home game. Cuddle Cam. That’s where a sweep of the camera through the stands stops upon cuddling couples for the enjoyment and mirth of fans. Before you reach for your travel sickness pills, its not the “get a room” free for all you’d expect. Most of the cams stop at blokes cuddling in Tiger jumpers providing ample evidence for the historical steady decline in Richmond membership uptakes.

The game itself sees the Hawks in control of the first quarter and despite shanking 7 points, take a  19 point lead. Tigers look shot until Dustin Martin wills himself into the game evading 3 tacklers to snap over his shoulder fully on the run. In the second, its an arm wrestle with the Hawks extending the lead by 7 points.

$_35Its set up for a cracker in the the third quarter with Richmond sensing their defensive pressure can unhinge the Hawks precision game, their hold, run and carry. That solid thought melts into air as Cyril Rioli turns the game on his head with 4 sensational goals from strolls, dummy sells, snaps, and steals off the boot. The game is dusted there. While on Martin, today he plays a sweeper role across half back mostly to give some badly needed clearance outta there. He plays the game with a marked self assurance and without his presence the margin surely would have been north of the final 66 points.

Deep in the last quarter an invader joins the game nearly running through the play on the Tiger half back flank. He’s obvious been on the jungle juice and gets the jump on security guards caught off their game presumably due to a bit of Angry Bird action on their smart phones. Attired in a Tiger guernsey worn over the top of a green untucked t-shirt, he makes it about 15 metres out before he stops suddenly as though realising he’d got much further than he expected and is not in possession of a Plan B. He does an obligatory little sell the dummy with the first security guard on the scene more out of habit than strategy. He then puts his hands up to surrender and to manfully accept the consequential $6000 fine. He’s ready to leave for the cells, but the Security Guard decides to get physical trying the ol foot behind his foot push and trip method which thankfully fails given the likelihood of a damages case should bone crack and break. This is purely for the crowd and to regain some respect in the eyes of the crowd for sitting 15 metres on the back marker when the invader bolted on the starters gun. Now most security goods are trained for the venue situation, for example an entry queue, a door or a passage. Areas easy to control, monitor and corral and deal with those who want to act up, sneak in, are pissed, banned or for whom they simply don’t like their look.  The big game invader compels us to confront the lack of fitness of many of these brethren publicly amplified on the big MCG stage. Post game there’s often a smaller ring of security guards close to the centre of the ground. These positions are usually reserved for the least fit of all as most invaders will be cleaned up by the outer drag net close to the fence.

m4Y0mMNF7iXooM-p7PPwcLgI’d like to see the odd crowd invader paid by the AFL and or MCG to invade the ground at regular intervals to both build and test the fitness of the guards in a form of just in time professional development that is becoming trendy in corporate circles. I just hope that I’m not now fuelling the opportunity for the lads to set me up via a bogus SMS to the anti social hot line. Look for me on crowd sourcing sites should I decide to make a dash for it.

During this incident, Jack Riewoldt is mistakenly given a soft boot get stat for retrieving the invaders lost shoe which he also shanks over the boundary on the full.

msHLAdW4-7bBE7UYHfZkibwMinutes from the end, big high flyin’ fistin’ Hawk Josh Gibson is fractionally late to Reece Conca’s mark getting him high and hard.

He goes into the book.

There’s a bit of push and shove no where nearly as entertaining as ground invasion. Sammy Mitchell and Shaun Burgoyne are chaired off in their 250 along with Tiger Daniel Jackson on his 150th.
