Season 2018 ~ Mick's AFL Footy Blog

3 clubs, 23 rounds, A slab of passion….

Geelong ReBooted

Big crowd at the G to see the undefeated ones. Pies lose it after umpire over rules Pendelbury determined major advantage rule play on. Cats controlled it most of the night. Lots of Pies went missing. Had to happen. Means jack all at this stage. Cats enjoying reboot under new coach after year of hell where even “Addy” style Gazza masks couldnt save the ship people power style. Suspect Cats will enjoy good run then implode towards the end. Pies looked shot at the stoppage contest without Jolly.

Suddenly Life, or more accurately, the competition has new meaning.

Sub Woof Woof Woof Woofer

Bad week for the dogs, money pilfered (or fraud as its called when the shirt is white), Lakey goes back to the Magoos, Hally cant get up. And it all started here on a damp Sunday twilight game at the G. Dogs jumped the Pies kicking the first three then went scoreless in the second. Game was on hold during third until Dogs kicked 5 in time on to be within a point. Scores were leveled then Dogs missed two set shots, ball went up to Leigh Brown who showed em how its done from the boundary. He kept showing them with 3 more and Dogs went from Woofer to Tweeter in the the blink of a forward press.

Still their song is good, despite a rerecording to substitute Western Bulldogs for Footscray. That last trumpet note on the exhaling WESTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT is pure heaven.

Drop Drop Drop

I thought Port would come out white hot after their fade against the young suns of guns. How wrong I was. I feel for Chad Cornes – took 3 great marks only to have each one taken off him due to interchange cock up, running over the mark, off the ball whack. Now he’s dropped. Lot of talk about culture. Didn’t you love those “Allan Scott – You were Wrong!” days accompanied by tie pulling and bar fights with off duty crows? Now we are peeling back the culture like gum on a well worn sole.

Boomer Harvey kicked two goals of the year. One from a pick up and pack snap from 40 metres. The other after 5 bounce, sell dummy, Scanlen’s footy card style baulk and drill down the throats of the faithful. Port just feel apart. Now Cornes is dropped and the assistant coach is silenced.

Roos face Cats who have tended to hand out spanking in recent meetings. To go and stand amongst all those cats? Last time it was the Ablett masks from the “Addy” – what this year? Osama Bin Thompson Dartboards?
Oh No – I can’t do that – I hear the call of the couch siren!

Hawks can’t repeat 2008

Sun Drenched G day after the drama of the Anzac Day clash and Storms defeat at the hands of the warriors. Upon arrival we encounter “Hawka” on his way to the ground. Hawks explode early with three goals on the trot in the first 5 minutes then the Cats crawl back the initiative and control the game from quarter time on. We get back to within 1 point in the last before blokes unsighted for most of the game awake from slumber to boot stirring goals that fuel the momentum. Bye next week, then Port.

Geelong 17 15 117 d Hawthorn 15 8 98

Hawka seemed more fun than the Middletons..

Anzac Day

We took in the Lou Richards Room for a 3 courser and some quaff. Lotta expectation about this one after last years debacle. We came down with some mates but were late after their kids played with the car radio til the battery took the gas while my jumper leads did an impromptu version of “Rust Never Sleeps”. Sure we lost respect in the eyes of the RACV but we had the game with enough time to know if was over by quarter time. This year not a lot different but the Dons got a bit closer. Johnny Diesel was gipped out of the Anzac Day medal by Scotty Pendelbury despite his raunchy version of Neil Young’s “Cinnamon Girl”

Hey Troo Roo

Beautiful Easter Sunday sets up the twilight game of the round as two winless monoliths go to war at the E. Roos control the game for most of it but cant put the Tiges away. They rise after a big call in the forward pocket and a freakish goal from “Feather” Dustin Martin. Scotty’s boys simply run out of puff leaving Troo Roos to dream again of a world with 4 points

Pie of the Tiger

Everyone got excited about a 3rd quarter burst when the Pies were thinking about what Pizza to have post game. Tigers looked good then…briefly. MIck got stuck in at pentultimate break for Pies to unleash final quarter goal fest.

Pre Game found hole in wall off Flinders serving $5 cab sauvs. Potentially more dangerous than Chris Dawes.

Taming the (Wet) Tiger

Got cocky and got tram to G without raincoat and had to shell out $5 for poncho retailing at Ground on 2019 prices. Worth the soaking on the way home to see the Hawks slide under every contest, work the ball out to runners and down stream to the big men up forward. Nice to see Hodgey shifted to full forward where he obliged with a goal and a Darren Jarman lace up style mark courtesy of a Buddy bullet down his gullet.

No window of opportunity for the Tiges at the G this night

Heres the view from the Tram on the happy (team at Hawthorn) way home.

Still pumped up so slip the Sensational Seventies DVD into the machine when get off the tram

Missed Huddo’s ton while looking for the chips

Black, White and Blue

Everything these days in a blockbuster for Collingwood. Still, no “BlockBuster Fatigue” this night for Mick’s Juggernaut in front of 83,000 thrill parched fans. Pies sparkled for 15 critical minutes in the second quarter to cruise to another win over the celebrated rival.

Collingwood 15 12 102 d Carlton 11 8 74

Why not relive some of these magic moments from the traditional rivals past encounters:
Who could forget Jezza being sent into the Nuetral Zone at Princess Park 1979? This is magic for my partner and I as were destined for life long union after this magnificent hit.

Or his big break in the 1970 Grand Final

Or Wayne Harmes in or out tap in the 1979 Grand Final?

A can of Dees

Back in the sixties you could get a nice footy poster if you collected soup labels. I remember my dee loving bro Robert had a Hassa Mann and Ron Barassi on the wall courtesy of our family penchant for Heinz soups. Love to have Rick Milne take a punt on their value now! On Sunday, the Dees went from main course to broth in 10 inspired minutes in the 3rd quarter. Cooda been 80 points if the Hawks have not found noodles in their own kicking boots.
